A Three-Part Series Returns to Mica Miller’s Story

Netflix’s Death of the Pastor’s Wife revisits the life and death of Mica Miller, a 30-year-old South Carolina woman whose body was found at Lumber River State Park in North Carolina in April 2024. Authorities ruled her death a suicide.

The documentary does not change that official ruling. Instead, the three-part series examines the years leading up to Miller’s death, including concerns she had described to police and allegations about her marriage to pastor John-Paul Miller.

That distinction is essential because the series combines a settled death determination with disputed claims and later legal developments involving people who are still living.

Friends and Family Supply Much of the Personal Record

Netflix says the series uses never-before-seen footage, journals, text messages, police reports, medical records and firsthand accounts from friends and relatives.

Those materials allow the filmmakers to reconstruct how people close to Mica understood her marriage and the period before her death. Her family and friends have described coercive control and abuse, while those claims remain separate from the official ruling on how she died.

The documentary also draws on John-Paul Miller’s sermons and messages, creating a record of how the marriage appeared publicly and how people close to Mica say it felt privately.

Later Legal Developments Became Part of the Story

The Netflix follow-up materials also address federal charges involving John-Paul Miller and efforts by Mica Miller’s family to advocate for changes in state law.

Those later developments should not be read backward as proof about the circumstances of Mica’s death. They are separate legal and political events that occurred after the 2024 death investigation.

That separation gives viewers a clearer way to follow a complicated story: one set of facts concerns the official death ruling, another concerns allegations about the marriage, and another concerns later legal proceedings.

The Series Is About Context More Than Mystery

Death of the Pastor’s Wife is not structured like a cold-case documentary in which filmmakers are trying to identify an unknown killer. The central death has an official ruling.

The unresolved questions are about context: what Mica had reported before her death, how family and friends interpreted the relationship, what evidence was documented at the time, and what happened legally afterward.

That makes the series a different kind of true-crime viewing. It asks audiences to hold several layers of information at once without turning allegations into established facts.
